Captain Coffee – The Process

Captain Coffee is story number forty-five in the #52ShortStories challenge.

**SPOILERS BELOW. If you have not read the story and want to be (hopefully) surprised, come back to this when you’re done.**

It’s rare that I go to Starbucks anymore because those two-dollar straight-up coffees are budget vampires, but I occasionally find myself there if I need to buy time for someplace to open (like the smog check guy). So imagine my joy when I was sitting there on a busy morning, laptop cracked open, working on a story when a guy comes walking in dressed in slippers and a very colorful robe resembling that of a superhero. He really stood out among the construction guys and white-collar salespeople types.

Of course, I had to stop what I was doing and hammer out a quick description of the guy (which you can read in the scratch file. Ignore the first line. Not sure what I had in mind there, but it never made it into the story). The concept worked itself out quite nicely over four days. Definitely a nice change of pace from the previous story.

Here’s the general scratch file:

  1. “Budget vampires” LOL! Captain Coffee is exactly the reason I’m unable to write out in public. 🙂

    1. Haha. Yes, it’s not easy to fight the distractions sometimes. 🙂
