Wolf's Tail + Wattpad Experiment

I’m sure some of you are familiar with Wattpad, but for those that aren’t, the most succinct way I can describe it is Facebook for stories. If you want the details, they have a decent About Us page.

I’ve known about the site for awhile but have steered clear because I was unsure about putting up something I’d eventually want to publish. Also, I got the impression the fan base trends toward the younger crowd, the most popular works seeming to be YA with vampires.

After further exploring Wattpad and it’s possibilities, I discovered there is more than meets the eye in both cases.

Concerning the first, I’ve come across examples of famous authors that have posted their work on Wattpad. Some put up excerpts to titillate, others complete rough drafts with the caveat that they could be taken down eventually or left up while the final, edited version is sold elsewhere. And then there are the amateur writers that have gained a decent enough following to nab book deals.

In regards to the second concern, fellow writerly-blogger friend Mobewan has been experimenting with it and is seeing some success with his sci-fi romp, The Advent Series. He’s been gathering readers and smart ones at that. They’ve left insightful, beta-level comments on his story so far. That’s something I would love to have and it appears that though the majority of readers want their YA with vampires, there is potential for other types of stories.

Not wanting to ignore this sudden inspiration, I decided to jump on opportunity to get my writing in front of some voracious readers and hopefully receive useful feedback. I put up some flash fiction awhile back with little fanfare (read that as “no fanfare”), but I’m moving forward with putting up a rough draft of Wolf’s Tail. I’m aiming to publish one scene each week and interact with the readers (may I find some!).

I would of course love to see more of my writer friends over there posting there own work and supporting each other, so if you aren’t already, give it some consideration, would you?

Oh, did I mentioned I’ve begun posting my latest draft of Wolf’s Tail? 🙂

  1. I have a couple of Wattpad stories as well. Did you say you posted your latest draft of Wolf’s Tail?

    1. I may not have mentioned that, so thank you for bringing it up!

Fantastic John, I will add you to my friends list there and check out the stories!

  2. You know, I’ve thought of using Wattpad, but just not sure how. I guess, as you said, as a way to get beta-readers…but I already have that. So, not sure of the point. I will, of course, go check you out. 🙂

    1. Yeah, it’s a bit of feeling my way around with a blindfold right now. Hopefully we’ll get the hang of it!!

And you’re awesome Nila. Thanks so much for the support. I shall do the same for you! 😀

  3. I’ll be interested to see how it goes for you. Nothing peeves me more than trying to wade through a bunch of YA vampire stories to get to some good stuff!

By the way, I read your excerpt and it looks really promising! Nice tone, and I’m already reminded of something like “Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” Looking forward to seeing it for sale pretty soon…

    1. Maybe if I bring in some angsty vampire miners that only dig at night, it will bring in the crowds!

Appreciate the kind words as well! Looking forward to getting the story moving.

  4. Hello Writerly-blogger friend*! Checked it out, I assume One Direction vampires will be in Chapter 2, but other than that I really enjoyed it. Fresh, clear and intelligent style. Snippy yet authentic dialogue. I’m just glad it’s not sci fi, otherwise I might find my readers deserting me for your story 🙂

For a rough draft you are off to a cracking start.

While I’m on, don’t forget to let me know when you post the draft of Wolf’s Tail.

    See you later Writerly-blogger friend.

    1. Hah! Yes, One Direction vampires coming soon and they want your gold!

Appreciate the feedback and kind words as well. And even if it was sci-fi, I don’t think you’d have to worry about desertion. I’ll make some time to catch up on Advent as well, I promise!

  5. […] let me thank you all for your support on my Wattpad posting of Wolf’s Tail. I’m beyond excited, like, galactically excited, to get things moving with that story. […]

  6. That’s a brave step. Good for you. Hope it goes well!

    1. Thanks Carrie! Fingers crossed…

  7. Awesome! I’ve been looking for something new to read on WattPad. Just finishing up Slavedays by Jay Victor, which is pretty good. Adding you to my reading list! I’m thinking of posting some short stories on WattPad to get some interest in my work in general. But there’s a HUGE pool to sift through. BTW I LOVE your cover!

    1. You definitely should! Let me know when you do and I’ll follow you there. There is definitely a big pool of stories to sort through.. I wish there was a better way to find the good stuff and also to get your stuff noticed.

And thanks for the cover compliment! 😀 I spend WAY too much time messing around with GIMP…

      1. Do you mean you did the cover? What’s GIMP?

        1. Oops, sorry for the confusion… Tech guy forgets sometimes the rest of the world isn’t quite so nerdy. GIMP is basically a free Photoshop. That’s where I made the cover!

          1. Oooo…I may have to check it out. Though I’m tech-stupid 😉

          2. A word of warning, it’s a little overwhelming at first. There are some good tutorials on the web, but even then… I guess that’s part of the price for “free”. lol

But I’d be happy to help if you check it out and have any questions.

  8. Thanks for this review of Wattpad. I do have an account but I haven’t done a dang thing with it. Like you, I heard that paranormal YA stuff is most popular, but then you have established writers like Margaret Atwood singing its praises. I’ll look for you. Maybe it won’t be so intimidating if I have a friend over there 🙂

    1. Looking forward to seeing you there Marie! Hopefully the experiment will pay off…

  9. I read your first chapter!! How cool that you’re posting! How do you feel about the feedback you’ve received so far?
